Though I've lived in New York for five years and consider myself some sort of a hybrid of the East Coast, the truth is: I'm a born and raised Southerner. I may not have an accent sorry, dudes, I know it's apparently sexy and I take my tea unsweetened, but when it comes to chivalry and the importance of gestures in datingmy North Carolina roots always shine through. If you're lucky enough to be graced with the presence of a Southern lady, here's a few things you need to know about dating these so-called belles ahem, never call me that :. I grew up next to a farm where I happily retrieved eggs from the hens for my neighbor every day after school. My dad taught me to drive a tractor when I was 1-year-old, and I learned how to ride a bike on a gravel road I have the scars on my knee to prove it. I spent more time outside than inside, and though I might rock stilettos and Calvin Klein dresses, I don't mind a little dirt. I make a decent living and I'm rather independent almost to a faultso I don't expect to be taken care of, especially dating a southerner someone I just met. Even so, I grew up around gentlemen who didn't think twice about extending their hand to help me get out of a car or stepping aside to let me walk first.
Growing up I always wanted to call a Southern guy mine. Going to church is just one of the things Southern families raise their children to do. To have a relationship with Christ seems to define a person on a more effective level. It is an important factor in most relationships he will have. If you are from the South, sweet dating a southerner is what you drink. It is a part of our culture and it is damn delicious too. Probably only a Northerner. Of course, everyone is going to have a past, but just as depicted in movies, Southerners tend to have more baggage than others.
Southern men make great husbands, according to sex therapist Ella Patterson. Dating a Southern man requires knowing a little bit about him and his family, in addition to where he grew up. If you listen to him, however, you can find out all the answers. Adopt a sweet, good-natured attitude toward your Southern beau. Vulgar mouths and attitudes may turn off true Southern dating a southerner.
More about dating a southerner:
There's no such thing as a "quick trip" anywhere because even Dallas is a small town. She'll see her fourth-grade teacher's nephew at the grocery store and spend a full half-hour listening to him describe his recent colonoscopy. She would rather die than neglect to RSVP. Her copy of Emily Post dating a southerner more well-worn than a preacher's bible. She's a cotillion graduate. But she can drink you under the table.
They'll call you posh. You don't even have to live in a detached house, have a double-barreled surname or possess any kind of title and they'll still call you posh. Call it cultural differences. They'll take the piss out of the way you say 'bath'. You'll take the piss out of the way they skip out vowels from words like 'to' and 'the'. It's a vicious cycle. Dating a southerner learn to eat gravy on everything. When they're cooking, anyway. And you'll actually grow to quite like it.
I will admit to being partially biased on this topic, as my roots are about as deep-fried and Southern-grown as they can be. As a self-proclaimed feminist, some people are surprised I value the traditional traits of a Southern man. While I do think there are some stereotypes about the traditional male-female gender roles still true in the South, my experience with true Southern men has been nothing dating a southerner empowering and encouraging. These days, in a respectable and valiant attempt to place men and women on the same playing field, chivalry seems to be viewed as demeaning or sexist. With this mindset, we are at risk of losing basic respect for one another and the idea that women are special and to be treated as such is quickly headed for the door. That being said, the fact that Southern gentlemen are still being raised right and taught how to treat women is more refreshing than a big glass of iced tea on a hot summer day. There are also exceptions outside of the South, and men who posses these great qualities who were raised north of the Mason Dixon line.
